School Sports Partnership

Our Partnership was the first to be set up in Leicestershire.

It began in September 2001 and was centred round Loughborough town. The Partnership consisted of 17 schools until it expanded in September 2004. It now consists of 50 schools and covers Shepshed, Castle Donington and Barrow/ Quorn as well as the original Loughborough area. The Partnership was set up in response to a Government’s sports strategy (‘A Sporting Future for All’ – April 2000) and its main purpose is to increase sporting opportunities for young people. It does this by creating a co-ordinated approach to PE, School Sport and OSHL (Out of School Hours) activities. Schools work and plan together in family clusters, which aids Key Stage transition and helps share good practice and ideas.

The key areas for our Partnership work are:

• Strategic Planning – to help enhance PE through School Improvement plans
• Primary Liaison – to establish and develop sporting programmes in primary schools
• School to Community – to build and support school – club links
• OSHL – to develop OSHL activities with the help of clubs, NGBs and local Sports Development Officers
• Coaching and Leadership – to develop leadership schemes to help older pupils and AOTTs acquire skills and qualifications
• Raising Standards – to support schools review their Sporting policies, which help pupils achieve their full potential.

The outcomes our Partnership strives to deliver are:

• Increased participation levels among school pupils
• Increased participation by girls, black and ethnic minorities, disabled people and those in areas of socio- economic disadvantage
• Improved standards of performance
• Improved motivation and attitude resulting in increased school achievements
• Increased numbers of qualified and active coaches in clubs and schools. 

We are lucky to be part of a supportive Leicestershire team of School Sport Partnerships and a progressive County Sports Partnership, which strengthens our ongoing work with the LEA and local Borough Council.
