In September 2011 the North Charnwood School Sport and Physical Activity Network
(SSPAN) was formed to respond to the change in Government and Local priorities in School Sport. The new Network will continue with and build upon the work of the original Burleigh School Sport Partnership, which was the first to be set up in Leicestershire. The North Charnwood SSPAN consists of 50 schools and covers Shepshed, Castle Donington and Barrow/Quorn as well as the original Loughborough area.
The main focus of the SSPAN is to deliver the new government initiative, the School Games. The School Games is a key Government priority for realising a meaningful sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
London 2012 provides an unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport than ever before. The SSPAN also works with Leicester-shire and Rutland Sport and other local partners to support their work with Young People in School Sport and promote collaborative work.
The North Charnwood SSPAN aims to deliver the following:
- A Year-round Competition Calendar
- Progression to County & National events
- A Cultural Component to School Sport
- Provision for Talent Identification
- Change4Life Sports Clubs
- A Young Leaders Academy
- A Coaching Academy
- Provision for Young Disabled Athletes
- A PE Data Collection Tool
