Behaviour Management Policy
Effective teaching and learning can only take place in a well-ordered environment. Promoting positive behaviour requires the commitment of all staff and pupils and consistency of practice is needed across Key Stage 4 to ensure that students know the standards of behaviour expected of them.
1. Principles
§ The Governing Body believes that in order to enable effective teaching and learning to take place, good behaviour in all aspects of college life is necessary. It seeks to create a caring and learning environment in college by :
§ Promoting good behaviour and discipline
§ Promoting self-esteem, self-discipline, proper regard for authority and positive relationships based on mutual respect
§ Ensuring fairness of treatment for all
§ Encouraging consistency of response to both positive and negative behaviour
§ Providing a safe environment free from disruption, violence, bullying and any form of harassment
§ Encouraging a positive relationship with parents and carers to develop a shared approach to involve them in the implementation of the college's policy and associated procedures
2. Roles and Responsibilities
§ The Governing body will establish in consultation with the Principal, staff and parents the policy for the promotion of good behaviour and keep it under review. It will ensure that it is communicated to pupils and parents, is non-discriminatory and the expectations are clear. Governors will support the college in maintaining high standards of behaviour.
§ The Principal will be responsible for the implementation and day to day management of the policy and procedures. Support for staff faced with challenging behaviour is also an important responsibility of the Principal.
§ Staff including teachers, support staff and volunteers, will be responsible for ensuring that the policy and procedures are followed and consistently and fairly applied. Mutual support amongst all staff in the implementation of the policy is essential. Staff have a key role in advising the Principal on the effectiveness of the policy and procedures. They also have responsibility, with the support of the Principal for creating a high quality learning environment, teaching good behaviour and implementing the agreed policy and procedures consistently.
§ The Governing Body, Principal and Staff will ensure there is no differential application of the policy and procedures on any grounds, particularly ethnic or national origin, culture, religion, gender, disability or sexuality. They will also ensure that the concerns of pupils are listened to and appropriately addressed.
1
§ Parents and Carers will take responsibility for the behaviour of their child both inside and outside the college. They will be encouraged to work in partnership with the college to assist the college in maintaining high standards of behaviour and will have to opportunity to raise with the school any issues arising from the operation of the policy.
§ Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own behaviour and will be made fully aware of the college policy, procedure and expectations. Students also have a responsibility to ensure that incidents of disruption, violence, bullying and any form of harassment are reported.
3. Training
The Governing Body will ensure that appropriate high quality training on all aspects of behaviour management is provided to support the implementation of the policy.
Training will be provided through the school in-service training programme and generally be included in the twilight training sessions. Staff will attend external training courses when appropriate. Training will be specific to staff needs and will be focused for groups of staff eg support staff, lunchtime supervisors and teachers. Opportunities for training will be scheduled to take account of the working hours of support staff
4. Interrelationship with other college policies
In order for the behaviour policy to be effective, a clear relationship with other college policies particularly equality of opportunity, special education needs and anti-bullying must be established. This is to be developed.
5. Involvement of outside agencies
The college works positively with external agencies. It seeks appropriate support from them to ensure that the needs of all pupils are met by utilising the range of external support available.
6. Review
The Principal, in consultation with staff will undertake systematic monitoring and conduct regular reviews of the behaviour management policy and procedures in order to evaluate them to ensure that the operation is effective, fair and consistent. The head will keep the Governing Body informed.
The Governing Body will regularly review this policy and associated procedures to ensure its continuing appropriateness and effectiveness. The review will take place in consultation with the headteacher, staff and parents.
The outcome of the review will be communicated to all those involved as appropriate.
7 Procedures
The procedures arising from the policy have been developed in consultation with staff. They make clear to students how acceptable behaviour, both inside and outside the classroom can be achieved and have a clear rationale which is made explicit to staff, students and parents. The procedures will be consistently and fairly applied and promote the idea of personal responsibility that every member of the college has a responsibility towards the whole community.
2
Behaviour for Learning
Classrooms need to be calm, orderly environments where students have the confidence to express themselves without fear of ridicule or intimidation. Learning will not take place if students behave inappropriately. Teachers will enforce classroom behaviour rules consistently. Refer to attached 'Behaviour for Learning - Classroom Rules'
If students do not meet the standard of behaviour for learning they will be dealt with by departmental behaviour management procedures. Tutors will be informed of persistent failure to meet behaviour for learning standards.
Positive behaviour within the classroom is promoted by well-planned, varied lessons.
Learning outcomes will be made explicit to students at the beginning of the lesson. Lessons will start effectively, often with a starting activity. Different learning styles will be acknowledged, students may be given choices of learning activity, encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and become independent learners. A plenary session will allow teachers and students to review progress towards learning outcomes.
All staff will promote positive behaviour, students will be reminded that their choice of behaviour will have a consequence. Staff will 'model' the behaviour expected from students and will approach students, in the first instance, in a courteous manner. Students will be taught how to behave appropriately. Opportunities for the explicit teaching of behaviour skills will be made in interventions, PSHE and assemblies.
There will be a team of behaviour coaches established within the college.

On Call
The On Call system is a response to serious situations. On Call should only be summoned if
the Health & Safety of any individual is threatened or if a student has refused to comply with
an instruction to leave the room or to enter an alternative classroom. Departmental assistance
should generally have been sought before On Call is requested.
If a student is the subject of an On Call incident then the following system applies :
First On-Call - lunchtime detention
Second On-Call - after school detention
Third On-Call - Behaviour Improvement Centre
Any sanction imposed by On Call is in addition to the sanction for the original offence.
Detentions
It is important that students recognise the authority of all staff. Therefore it is preferable for all staff to share the task of supervising detentions.
§ Students must record any detentions given in their planner
§ Students will be given 2 opportunities to attend a lunchtime detention. Failure to attend will result in a 1 hour after school detention
§ Failure to attend after school will result in 1 day in the Behaviour Improvement Project
(This will be in addition to the after school detention)
