Global Fellowships Awarded to Burleigh Students
16th June 2009
Two students from Burleigh Community College, Nimisha Thanki and Annie Webborn are preparing for the trip of a lifetime as part of the Prime Minister’s Global Fellowship Programme.
Nimisha and Annie found out about the honour when they both received a letter from the Prime Minister telling them that they had been chosen. Only 100 young people have been selected to take part this year from the UK.
The purpose of the programme, which is managed by the British Council, is to enable young people, as leaders and citizens of the future, to have first hand experience of what globalisation means in practice so that they are able to make the most of the opportunities that the 21st Century has to offer.
The fellowship will give them both an unprecedented opportunity to experience life, education and business in emerging world economies. Nimisha, who will be spending 6 weeks in India, said ‘I chose India because I wanted to see how globalisation had affected the major cities there.’ Annie’s destination is China and she said ‘I am looking forward to the whole experience. This is a wonderful opportunity for both of us.’
Both students were keen to thank their teacher, Rupert Davies, for suggesting to them that they applied for the programme. He said ‘Nimisha and Annie have done very well to be accepted as only a small number of students are chosen each year. They obviously impressed the British Council with their high levels of commitment and interest. Everyone at the College would like to congratulate them on what they have achieved.’
After they return, Nimisha and Annie will make presentations about their experiences to students at the College.
