Burleigh Represent County in National Futsal Championships
30th June 2008
BurleighCommunity College ’s U16 boys represented Leicestershire and Rutland County FA in this years Umbro sponsored FA National Youth Futsal Championships, at the National Institute for Sport in Sheffield . Futsal is an indoor, 5 aside version of Football.
In the qualifying group stages, the boys were inspired playing on the main pitch in the centre of the Indoor Athletics track flanked by packed stands of spectators. They played fast attacking football with some brilliant individual skills being demonstrated by the players. The opposition found it difficult to contain wave after wave of attacks and Burleigh were scoring freely in the opening games with Abdul Munaim and Tom Duggan leading the scoring. It was no surprise that not only did Burleigh top their qualifying group, but did so with the best record giving them top ranking for the knock out stages.
In the quarter finals, a number of missed chances and a well organised opposition restricted Burleigh to a solitary late goal from Lloyd Tack, but this was enough to give them a semi final place against very strong opposition from Lincolnshire .
In the semi final, a change of tactics to counter the oppositions strengths clearly didn’t work as Burleigh lost 5-0. Oh well, a great day out at a great venue and some great futsal!
