High Schools become Specialist Sports Colleges
Its great news for Sport in Loughborough again! Limehurst High School and Garendon High School have both successfully achieved Specialist Sports School Status. This means that they, together with Burleigh Community College will now deliver a series of programmes and courses in Sport and to all students and pupils in their schools
This is an enormous opportunity for the two High Schools. Significant investment will take place over the next three years and the Schools will now be able to link into the programmes that are already delivered at Burleigh
This is going to not only ensure that Sport and PE courses are delivered but it will also give opportunity for other subjects to get involved in driving up educational standards. As part of the bid the three Schools are going to set up a team of subject Champions in Maths, Science and Modern Foreign Languages.
‘We are really excited by this new status’ said Jane Walker Head teacher of Garendon High School . ‘This will give us the opportunity to introduce some new aspects into our teaching that we have wanted to do for a number of years but have not had the money to achieve that’. Steve Coneron, Head teacher from Limehurst also states that ‘this will help us to sustain the changes that we have made here at Limehurst and provide new opportunities for the Children in both of our Schools’
John Smith, Principal of Burleigh Community College was equally excited. ‘For the first time since we became a specialist college in 1997 we will have real opportunity to work in partnership to drive up standards not only in Sport but in a full range of Subjects’
The three schools are committed to working closer and are currently looking to make a formal partnership to introduce Trust Status.
Specialist Colleges not only deliver a vast range of subjects and classes in the identified area but also are focussed on raising standards of achievement overall. As a result of this success there is also additional money available to deliver a Community programme and make further real links with the Primary sector.
