Burleigh Community College held its annual Achievement Afternoon on Friday 16th May. Students, staff and governors gathered in the Sports Centre to celebrate the many successes enjoyed by students over the last year. The winners of the two most prestigious awards were Abigail Cave and Sam Craggs. Abigail was voted Student of the Year for Year 11 for her excellent attitude and approach to her studies. Sam won Student of the Year for Year 13 and was described by his tutor, Irene Hannah, as "a model student". Sam has also given freely of many hours of his time to provide technical support to a range of College events including musicals, concerts and awards evenings. The Joli Begum Award for courage and bravery in the face of adversity was awarded posthumously to Tom Walker. Tom lost his fight against cancer earlier in the year and his award was received, to a standing ovation, by his brother Michael. Other award winners included Lucy Hatton and Lyssa Musgrave who won the Most Improved Student Award for Year 13 and Year 11 respectively and Samee Chowdhury who was presented with the Community Award. Laura Warrington, Laura Peacock and Gulcin Gulbeyaz won Sports Personality of the Year for Year 10, 11 and Post-16 respectively. Assistant Principal Lynn Bradley, who organised the event said: This was another lovely afternoon. It was great to be able to reward students who have enjoyed success across the many different aspects of College life." John Smith, Principal said: "It is always a great pleasure to recognise the achievement of our students in this way. We wish them all good luck in their examinations and look forward to hearing of their successes in the next stage of their education or employment."
