Local Teacher scores with FA Award
Burleigh Community College PE teacher, John Heathcote, picked up a recognition award from the Football Association at Wembley last week, for his Outstanding Contribution to the FA's Leadership and Volunteering Programme. Six years ago John helped organise a National residential young leaders camp at Ascot for 100 budding young football leaders from around the UK. This programme has become an established event in the FA's education strategy and is being replicated around the country on a smaller scale in most County football associations.
A unique feature of the Leadership Camp is that it is now managed and run by a team of Young leaders who themselves attended the Camps. John's contribution to the programme also sees him as a mentor to young football coaches and visiting Africa with a group of young leaders to develop the scheme with organisations primarily involved in Girls Football and orphanages.
Director of Specialism at the College, Alastair O’Connor said “We are very proud of John and what he has achieved. This has many spin-offs for our students, community and partner schools providing many opportunities for all involved.”
