What's on offer?
Facilities
Despite being a large property, Field House has a relatively low capacity of 40 students. The house is exceptionally well maintained, well furnished and is beautifully decorated. The house is cleaned daily, the standard of catering is very high, linen is laundered each week and the house has washing and drying machines for personal laundry.
Each youngster reside in homely bedrooms of up to 4, with his or her own chest of drawers and wardrobe and adequate study areas for all students. There are well furnished common rooms, with colour TV, video recorder and hi fi system. There is a small library and a variety of games and sports equipment including table tennis, board games and a computer room. Outside we have facilities for 5-a-side football, short tennis, rounders, basketball and volleyball. We have a small well stocked tuck shop run by a senior student.
Staff
Field House is staffed by professional tutors supported by domestic staff. The Head of house and principal assistants, reside in the house and as a result there is always experienced cover. Additionally, several non-residential members of staff are employed on a regular basis to ensure there is adequate supervision at all times. Duty staff take a very active role and pride themselves on the quality of their relationships with the boarders in their care. Domestic staff work hard to maintain an excellent standard of provision. The matron oversees medical and dental care.
Study
Some of the duty staff are teachers at Burleigh. Boarders can therefore take advantage of extra tuition in various subjects. Homework sessions are supervised daily and the house has reference books and a small library. Older boarders, studying for GCSE and A level examinations are, of course, expected to undertake extra work in their study bedrooms. The Head of house attends parents evenings in loco parentis and maintains regular contact with boarder's school tutors and subject staff. Parents are kept informed of their children's progress, both at school and within the boarding house, by frequent contact with the Head of house.
Activities
A varied programme of activities is offered. There are a number of whole house activities during the year such as social evenings, theatre trips and sporting activities. Field House also has a number of formal functions where boarders experience the atmosphere and etiquette of serious occasions. During the summer term boarders attend camp unless they have examination commitments. There are video open evening and excursions. Sports activities take place on Sunday afternoons, when boarders have use of the College swimming pool and sports hall. Boarders are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities and many represent their school at sport, or join local clubs.
Visits
Each weekend boarders may go into town. In keeping with the family spirit - brothers and sisters are often here together, and boarders are encouraged to extend invitations or visit friends. With parental permission boarders may stay overnight with school friends at weekends and there are occasional free weekends when boarders can visit their guardians or parents. We are keen to ensure however that overnight stays are infrequent and do not happen during the week.
